Advances in topological quantum materials for energy conversion

Abstract

Topological quantum materials (TQMs) with protected surface states (SSs) have drawn significant attention in the field of energy conversion owing to their fundamentally novel physical behaviors. The existence of protected gapless SSs arising from the non-trivial topology of the bulk wave functions is one of the key features of topological materials. Comprehending the surface responses and seeking exceptionally effective materials are made simpler by the unique quantum states in TQMs, which provide a stable electron bath with immense electronic conductivity, carrier mobility, and chronic and resolute spin states. This review aims to discuss TQMs in various applications, including water splitting, photovoltaics and photoelectrochemical cells. TQMs with state-of-the-art advances by investigating their significant characteristics and possible utilization. Researchers are confident in pushing TQMs to their limits via Fermi arc and defect engineering to create an efficient and sustainable energy landscape. Conclusively, this review provides a brief overview of the impact of TQMs on other energy conversion systems.
