The initiation of chains in the pyrolysis of isobutane
Abstract
The rate of the chain initiation reaction, the radical decomposition of isobutane, i-C4H10→ i-C3H7+ CH3, in the pyrolysis of isobutane has been measured over a range of pressures at 824°K by determination of propane yields. A thermochemical estimate, k= 1018·4exp(–83,100/RT) sec.–1, is shown to be in close agreement and to represent an upper limit. Previously quoted values are shown to predict an excessive rate.
