5,6-Dihydro-5-methyl-2,3;8,9-bismethylenedioxybenzo[c]phenanthridine (dihydroavicine)(XV) and its 8,9-dimethoxy-analogue (dihydronitidine)(XVII) have been conveniently prepared by a route involving enamide photocyclisation.
