Valence-band X-ray emission spectra of manganese in various oxidation states

Abstract

The Kα1,2, Kβ1,3, and Kβ2,5, Lα1,2, LβX-ray emission spectra of manganese in MnO, Mn2O3, MnO2, K[MnO4], MnF2, and K2[MnF6] have been recorded. A knowledge of the Kα1,2 energy enables the Kβ and L emission spectra to be placed on a common energy scale thus revealing 4p and 3d(+4s) character in the molecular orbitals giving rise to the spectra. The changes in peak intensities and energies are rationalised using a simple molecular-orbital (ligand-field) approach.
