Synthesis, fluxional behaviour, and oxidative-addition reactions of some µ-alkylthio-diplatinum(II) complexes

Abstract

A series of complexes cis-[Pt₂X₂(PMe₂Ph)₂(µ-SMe)₂](X = Cl, I, Me, or Ph) and cis-[Pt₂X₂(PMe₂Ph)₂(µ-SEt)₂](X = Cl or Me) has been prepared. The complexes undergo a fluxional process thought to involve inversion at the bridging sulphur atoms. and the rate is strongly dependent on the group X. Reactions of the complexes with X = Me or Ph with methyl iodide are complicated and involve oxidative-addition–reductive-elimination sequences to give monomeric organoplatinum complexes as the final products.
