Ruthenium catalysed hydrogenation of dimethyl oxalate to ethylene glycol

Abstract

Dimethyl oxalate is efficiently hydrogenated to ethylene glycol under mild conditions [p(H 2 ) 70 bar; 100 °C] using a ruthenium catalyst based on Ru(acac) 3 and MeC(CH 2 PPh 2 ) 3 .
