Graphene-based chiral liquid crystal materials for optical applications
Abstract
This review describes the latest research progress on graphene-based chiral liquid crystal (GBCLC) materials. Colloidal graphene chiral liquid crystals and graphene/chiral liquid crystal composites, including the chiral nematic phase, twist grain boundary (TGB) phase, blue phase (BP), and their promotion effect on optical applications are the focus of investigation. The theoretical basis, synthesis route and applications of GBCLCs as well as the stabilizing effect of graphene on the BP are also discussed. Generally, chirality provides graphene liquid crystalline materials with richer optical anisotropy and faster response times, which significantly improve the optical properties of this species of materials. Thus, GBCLCs are a promising material for organic and inorganic controllable soft materials and optical applications. This review also introduces future perspectives and opportunities for GBCLCs.
