A Ni-modified CuS-based self-supported electrocatalyst with nanobead-like porous morphology for efficient hydrogen production in basic media†
Abstract
This study aims to improve the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic activity of CuS-based electrocatalysts in basic media for efficient and cost-effective hydrogen production. CuS is a promising alternative to noble metal-based electrocatalysts due to its low cost and high stability, but individual CuS has not been established as a good HER electrocatalyst. Recent reports suggest combining Cu and Ni to increase the HER catalytic activity of Cu-based electrocatalysts. This study explores the synergy of Cu and Ni by decorating the surface of CuS with Ni for an effective HER. The results show that sulfurizing electrodeposited Cu2O with the Ni precursor increases the electrochemical performance, achieving an overpotential of 325 mV to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm−2. This study provides a promising approach for developing efficient and cost-effective HER electrocatalysts.
