Our mission at NPR is to publish high quality and thought-provoking reviews which cover the most interesting research from key areas across natural products research. 2011 has been another great year for NPR in this respect and we would like to thank our authors, readers, referees and Editorial Board members for helping us to continue to take the journal forward.

Looking back on 2011

February 2011 saw the publication of our second Marine Natural Products themed issue. Featuring a Highlight and eight Reviews the themed issue covered the broad range of marine natural products research, including several of our regular articles.

The end of 2011 saw the retirement of two long-serving Editorial Board members. Professor Russell Cox steps down after six years in the role and we would like to wish him well in his new role as an Associate Editor for the new RSC Publishing journal RSC Advances. Professor Daisuke Uemura also steps down after six years with the Board. We would like to thank them both for their time with the journal.

The 2011 NPR Lectureship was awarded to Professor Christian Hertweck from the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research in Jena, Germany. Professor Hertweck gave his lecture in July at the 52^nd annual meeting of the American Society of Pharmacognosy in San Diego, US, and the award was presented to him by NPR Board Chair Brad Moore.

NPR in 2012

This year looks to be another exciting one for NPR. We already have our next themed issue lined up on the structural biology of biosynthetic enzymes, so look out for details of that later in the year. Also, we are delighted to welcome two new researchers to the NPR Editorial board for 2012: Professor Dirk Trauner (Ludwig-Maximilian-University, Munich, Germany) and Professor Ikuro Abe (University of Tokyo, Japan).
