Editorial – probe and chip approaches to cell analysis

Welcome to the most recent themed issue of Analyst, dedicated to Probe and Chip Approaches to Cell Analysis. The aim of this collection of articles is to cover a wide range of aspects of cell analysis based on recent microfluidic and lab-on-a-chip technologies by highlighting analytically important developments and novel applications.

We were fortunate to have two great Guest Editors to help shape the issue: Jonathan Cooper and Luke Lee. Professor Cooper is the Wolfson Chair of Bioengineering at the University of Glasgow, UK. His research focuses on the advantages of miniaturization in the biomedical sciences, and he is active in research into biosensors, lab-on-a-chip, nanophotonics and acoustics. Professor Lee is the co-director of the Berkeley Sensor & Actuator Centre and the director of the Biomedical Institute of Global Healthcare Research and Technology at the University of California, Berkeley, USA. His current research interests are in bionanoscience, nanomedicine for global healthcare and personalized medicine.

The following papers are a testament to the wide breadth of highly fascinating research in this area: from the analysis of tumor cells to the evaluation of blood cells in stored blood designed for transfusions; cervical cancer screening to neuronal network reconstruction and monitoring; stress marker profiling, to antibiotic resistance.

Our thanks go to the Guest Editors for their help with this themed collection, and to all the authors for their contributions. We hope that you enjoy this collection of articles, which we present as a snapshot of this exciting area of research.
