Although this is my first year as chair of the Chemical Society Reviews Editorial Board, I have been involved with the journal since 2005, first as a Commissioning Editor and then as Associate Editor. During that time, Chem Soc Rev has expanded significantly and is now publishing over 400 reviews per year. The priority of the Editorial Board has been and will remain to maintain the high quality of the articles we publish. We have recently refreshed our review formats with new guidelines on tutorial reviews in order to make them more accessible to students and general readers. Tutorial reviews are at the heart of Chem Soc Rev and will continue to make up a good proportion of our reviews. We have also increased the flexibility of our other type of review – now simply known as a ‘Review Article’ – to give authors the freedom to cover both emerging and established areas of chemical science effectively. Going forward we will publish only the best reviews from research leaders and from rising stars – consequently it is likely that our rejection rate will increase over the coming years. I look forward to working with the Editorial Board and Managing Editor over the next four years to continue the success of Chem Soc Rev.
