Celebrating 60 years of the Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter

This themed collection is dedicated to celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter (FJIRSM), Chinese Academy of Sciences. This online article collection aims to present a picture of nanomaterials, nanoscience, and nanotechnology research by the current faculties as well as alumni from FJIRSM, and to stimulate collaborations between FJIRSM and institutions around the globe.

Founded in 1960 by academician Jiaxi Lu, FJIRSM is one of the excellent research institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. After 60 years of development, the institute has become a comprehensive research base for structural chemistry, new materials (including nanomaterials), device integration, and relevant applications. FJIRSM currently has more than 1000 employees, including 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 120 professors and 179 associate professors.

In recent years, FJIRSM has been continuously strengthening the construction and development of high-level technological innovation platforms, including the State Key Laboratory of Structural Chemistry, the Key Laboratory of Design and Assembly of Functional Nanostructures of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Materials Chemistry and Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Research Center for Optoelectronic Crystal Material Engineering Technology, and the Key Laboratory of Coal-to-Ethylene Glycol and Related Technologies of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

FJIRSM is seeking and welcomes cooperation from all domestic and international materials-related research institutions, and also welcomes scientists around the world to join the FJIRSM in its mission of “focusing on original basic research, strengthening innovation, and promoting the transfer of achievements”.

This special themed issue celebrates the 60th anniversary of FJIRSM, and showcases a selection of papers from current professors and alumni of FJIRSM, including reviews, full papers and communications, highlighting the most recent progress in all branches of nanoscience and nanotechnology, ranging from the synthesis, assembly, characterization, modelling and simulation of nanomaterials, and their applications in biomedical and energy-related fields, catalysis, sensing, light-emission and displays, to environment-based applications.

Qingdong Zheng obtained his Ph.D. degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo, USA in 2005. After carrying out his postdoctoral research at the Johns Hopkins University, he joined the Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and became a professor in 2010. His main interests focus on multifunctional molecular materials and devices, and in particular on the field of semiconducting materials for photonic and energy applications. He served as an Associate Editor of RSC Advances during 2015–2019, and is currently an Editorial Board Member of RSC Advances.

Xueyuan Chen is Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Luminescence. He earned his B.Sc. from University of Science and Technology of China (1993) and his Ph.D. from the Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter (FJIRSM), Chinese Academy of Sciences (1998). From 2001 to 2005, he was a postdoctoral research associate in the Chemistry Division of Argonne National Laboratory, U.S. Department of Energy, where he studied the photophysics and photochemistry of heavy elements. In 2005, he joined the faculty at FJIRSM. His research focuses on the electronic structures, optical properties and applications of inorganic luminescent materials, such as lanthanide (rare-earth) nano-bioprobes and LED phosphors.

Maochun Hong is a Full Professor and Academic Director at the Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He served as an Associate Editor of Crystal Growth & Design during 2006–2018. His research interests are focused on nanomaterials, crystal design and growth, supramolecular chemistry, and inorganic–organic hybrid functional materials.

Prof. Rong Cao is the Director of the Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter (FJIRSM) and Institute of Urban Environment (IUE), CAS. He received his B.S. degree in Chemical Physics from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and his Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from FJIRSM, worked as a Research Assistant at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and is a recipient of a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship for Foreign Researchers from Nagoya University. In 1998, he became a full professor at FJIRSM. His research interests focus on porous materials including metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs) and macrocyclic cucurbit[n]urils.

Zhang Lin is a professor at the School of Metallurgy and the Environment, Central South University. She was honored as a National Distinguished Young Scholar in 2011 and a Changjiang Distinguished Professor in 2017 (Ministry of Education). Zhang is currently appointed as the deputy director of the Chinese National Engineering Research Center for Control & Treatment of Heavy Metal Pollution. She has long been engaged in chemical theoretical research to control heavy metal pollution, and is committed to researching scientific issues in pollution control engineering. She is also working as an Associate Editor of Environmental Science: Nano.
