Studies on the synthesis of linear aliphatic compounds. Part 4. An approach to long-chain paraffins with lateral side-chains
Abstract
The synthesis of 24-bromo-13-butyl-13-hydroxytetracosanal ethylene acetal is described. After dehydration, this compound allows chain extension in either direction using the methods given in Parts 1–3 in this series. A C60 polyene (mixture of isomers) was thus obtained which was suitable for hydrogenation to the 12-butyl derivative of the C56 n-paraffin previously described, so exemplifying a route to model compounds for low-density polyethylene.
