Synthesis of the acyltetronic acid fragment of tetronomycin

Abstract

Synthesis of the left-hand portion [(±)-(13)] of tetronomycin (1)via an aldol reaction of methyl γ-methylene-β-tetronate (12) with aldehyde (11) prepared from 3-methoxy-5-methylbenzoic acid is reported.
