A gas phase perspective on the Lewis acidity of metal ions in aqueous solution

Abstract

A pattern of instability exhibited by solvated metal dications in the gas phase shows a remarkable correlation (covering 10 orders of magnitude) with the ability of the same metal ions to promote the release of protons in aqueous solution.
