New poling method for piezoelectric ceramics

Abstract

The poling process is necessary to obtain the piezoelectric activity of piezoelectric materials. Herein, we report a new poling method for poling lead-based and lead-free ceramics, where alternating current (AC) fields were applied. Interestingly, saturated d33 values could be obtained when the electric fields reached the critical value, which is determined by the composition of the materials. Their piezoelectric properties are strongly dependent on the measurement temperatures; however, the measurement frequencies slightly affect the piezoelectricity of the ceramics. By the optimization of the poling parameters, piezoelectric activity of the ceramics poled under AC can almost match the values obtained under DC. This new poling method may significantly contribute to further research of piezoelectric ceramics.
