Unlocking the potential of catalysts in thermochemical energy conversion processes

Abstract

Catalysis is indeed an essential component of many energy-related processes and is likely to become even more critical as we transition towards more sustainable and low-carbon energy systems. This review provides valuable insights into the role of catalysts in thermochemical energy conversion processes and highlights recent advances in this rapidly evolving field. In an attempt to cover a broad spectrum of scenarios, the review considers recent progress in catalysts linked to various thermochemical energy conversion fields including pyrolysis, hydrothermal carbonization, hydrothermal liquefaction, hydrothermal gasification, biomass chemical looping gasification, and Fischer–Tropsch process. The review also provides a valuable resource for understanding the competitive landscape and identifying potential opportunities for innovations in catalysis applied to the energy sector via patent landscape analysis. On the whole, discussions and deliberations presented here can provide valuable insights and resources for researchers and professionals working in this field.
