A high performance IT-EOG cell based on a solid/molten Bi2O3–B2O3 composite electrolyte†
Abstract
New electrolytes with high oxygen ionic conductivity are required to realize efficient intermediate temperature electrochemical oxygen generators (IT-EOGs). The solid/molten Bi2O3–0.1 wt% B2O3 composite with an ionic conductivity of 2.2 S cm−1 at 740 °C is a promising candidate for IT-EOG electrolytes. Here, we report the record oxygen production rate per unit power (31 cm3 min−1 W−1) of the Bi3Ru3O11–40 wt% Bi1.6Er0.4O3 electrode/Bi2O3–0.1 wt% B2O3 electrolyte/Bi3Ru3O11–40 wt% Bi1.6Er0.4O3 electrode IT-EOG cell, which is an order of magnitude higher than that of the IT-EOG cells based on state-of-the-art SDC, YSB, and DWSB ceramic electrolytes reported in the literature.
