Synthesis, photochromic properties, and bioactivity of spiropyrans with electron-donating/withdrawing substituents on indoline and [2H]-chromene rings

To study the impact of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents on the indoline and [2H]-chromene rings of spiropyrans, we synthesized four spiropyrans with varied substituents, analysed their photoswitching kinetics, and evaluated their antibacterial properties.

Photo-controllable cytotoxicity in cell culture using a diarylethene photoswitch

The intracellular dynamics of cytotoxic isomer of photochromic diarylethene (DAE) was explored by studying the time limit that green light irradiation can cancel the cell death, which is doomed after one day by 10 seconds of UV irradiation.

About this collection

This themed collection, guest edited by Professors Martina Cacciarini (University of Florence, Italy), Nadja Simeth (University of Göttingen, Germany), Wiktor Szymanski (University of Groningen, The Netherlands) and Andrew Woolley (University of Toronto, Canada), highlights recent research pertaining to the development and characterization of molecular photoswitches, especially with the outlook on their biological and biomedical applications.
This collection covers many areas including the design of regular and visible-light-operated photoswitches, their synthesis (including spectroscopic evaluation), applications in nanomedicine, photopharmacology, chemical biology, bio-sensing and imaging.
New articles will be added to the collection upon publication. Please return to this page frequently to see the collection grow.
