The selective addition of difunctional radical addends, e.g. R2Ċ—O, R = Me or Ph, to the 6,7-alkene centre of 3,7-dimethylocta-1,6-diene, and of monofunctional radicals, e.g. Me2ĊOH, 1,3-dioxolanyl, and tetrahydrofuryl radicals at the 1,2-bond is rationalised.
