After working as a postdoctoral fellow (1978–1981) at Indiana University in USA, he joined the Department of Applied Chemistry, Osaka University, as an Assistant Professor in 1981 and was promoted to a Full Professor in 1994. His research interests are electron transfer chemistry and their applications in all fields of chemistry, particularly artificial photosynthesis. He has been the director of a CREST (Core Research for Evolutional Science and Technology) project of the Japan Science and Technology Agency since 1999, which was extended as a SORST (Solution Oriented Research for Science and Technology) project. He was also the leader of a Global COE program, Global Education and Research Centre for Bio-Environmental Chemistry from 2007–2012.
