π-Extended regioisomeric dithienoacene-fused pyrenes: structures, properties, and application in field-effect transistors

The optoelectronic properties of two novel regioisomeric dithienoacene-fused pyrenes were investigated. 2-SS-PDTA exhibits superior single-crystal FET mobility up to 1.35 cm2 V−1 s−1, in contrast to the 0.18 cm2 V−1 s−1 for 1-SS-PDTA.

Probing intersystem crossing in multi-brominated eumelanin through transient absorption and surface hopping dynamics

Ultrafast intersystem crossing (ISC) followed by internal conversion in multi-brominated eumelanin monomers. The rate of ISC (kISC) in the tri-brominated monomer is higher than that in the di-brominated monomer due to an enhanced heavy atom effect.

A cucurbit[8]uril-mediated host–guest complex for red-light photocatalysis

Two-step host–guest complexation can occur between an elongated dye and CB[8], leading to the formation of CB[8]@2TPP and 3CB[8]@2TPP sequentially. Of these species, 3CB[8]@2TPP in particular can act as an efficient red-light photocatalyst.

Triphenylamine-functionalized aza-BODIPY dyes: synthesis, characterization, and their application as hole transport materials in perovskite solar cells

Triphenylamine-functionalized NIR-absorbing aza-BODIPY dyes 1–3 were synthesized and their properties were investigated in detail. A PCE of 18.12% was achieved for the PSCs employing dye 1 as the dopant-free hole transporting material.

Pyridine-based tricarboxamides: complementary monomers for supramolecular copolymerization with C3-symmetric oligophenylenetricarboxamides

The formation of supramolecular copolymers between complementary chiral tricarboxamides 1 and 2 is investigated. The blocky microstructure of such heteropolymers has been elucidated by applying a co-assembly model. This model predicts the coexistence of large blocks of the homopolymers.

Organic Chemistry Frontiers is delighted to present this collection of articles dedicated to Professor Frank Würthner in celebration of his 60th birthday.

Frank Würthner, the chair professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Würzburg, is a pioneer in the fields of organic dyes, supramolecular chemistry and materials. From 2015 to 2024, Frank served as the Associate Editor of Organic Chemistry Frontiers, making instrumental contributions to the rapid growth of the journal, particularly in his areas.

This themed collection, guest edited by Agnieszka Nowak-Król (University of Würzburg), Gustavo Fernandez (University of Münster) and Florian Beuerle (University of Tübingen), is a tribute to Frank’s outstanding career. It highlights recent significant advances in the broad field of organic chemistry, with a particular focus on functional organic molecules.
